After the Zero Model 21 (A6M2) scored huge wins against Allied forces in the first half of the Pacific War, the Model 32 (A6M3) arrived in summer 1942, with a Sakae 21 engine and clipped-tip 11m wings. Top speed rose, but range dropped hard, so the Model 22 (A6M3) was rushed in to fix the Model 32's shortcomings. It brought back the 12m wingspan and folding wingtips for maneuverability, and new wing fuel tanks pushed range back to 2,560km. The Model 22 (A6M3a), armed with long-barreled cannons, also entered production. Deployed mainly to the Solomon Islands from early 1943, Zeroes fought fierce battles against US fighters.
