NASA started developing the Space Shuttle in 1972. From the first launch of Columbia in 1981 to the program's retirement in 2011, a total of 135 launches flew. The shuttles carried experiments in the space lab and multipurpose replenishment modules, helped build the International Space Station, and deployed space telescopes and satellites. Columbia and Challenger were lost in accidents, but Atlantis kept going. In May 1989 it sent the Magellan probe to Venus, and that October it sent the Galileo probe toward Jupiter. In 2000 it flew an ISS assembly and replenishment mission. Atlantis flew the final mission successfully, closing out a shuttle era of more than 30 years. This plastic model kit reproduces Space Shuttle Atlantis at 1/100 scale: length 373mm, full width 238mm. It can be built as the last flight of July 2011.
