The Abrams that learned the hard way. When the U.S. rolled into Iraq in 2003, the M1A2 went with them, and it stayed there through the occupation. RPGs and IEDs in the cities forced the upgrade. TUSK I came in 2004 with reactive armor on the hull sides, underbody armor against land mines, an M2 machine gun above the main gun, crew infrared cameras and an external phone for talking to the infantry. TUSK II added tile-style reactive armor on the turret and hull sides, an armored shield for the commander and a rear-view camera. Field depots could bolt a kit on in about 12 hours, and no two tanks came out the same. Reactive armor meant the kits only went on in theatre. Tamiya's 1/35 scale model is built from new research, making it the best M1A1 kit in the model world.
