Germany started work on a new heavy tank in February 1943 to counter the growing threat from Russian tanks. The result was the Panzerkampfwagen VI-B Tiger II, better known as the King Tiger, built for thick armor and a serious main gun. Henschel and Porsche, both experienced heavy tank builders, produced rival prototypes with different turrets. The Henschel design won out. The Type 43 L71 88mm high-velocity main gun could punch through 170mm of armor plate at 1000 meters. Two 7.92mm machine guns covered the front hull and the turret. Turret front armor was 185mm thick, and the side panels were 88mm. A Maybach HL230 P30 V-12 liquid-cooled engine pushed out 700 horsepower. Mass production at the Henschel factory started in August 1944, right after the last Tiger I tanks rolled out. The tank packed advanced technology for its day.
