Merkava MBT Plastic Model Kit, Israeli 1/35 Scale - Tamiya

About this part

In 1948 the new Jewish state of Israel had almost no armored fighting vehicles. Export bans on tanks kept it from buying them. Israel scraped together a few derelict Shermans slated for scrap and some armored cars. That was nowhere near enough for a real force. After the 1948 cease-fire, several dozen Shermans of all types were bought from around the world and standardized on a production line set up in Israel, designated the M-50 Sherman. Later they bought the British Centurion, which went down the same line for rebuilding to Israeli specs. Armor still depended on other countries, and shipments were sometimes refused for reasons outside Israel's control. The line started getting requests for modifications, and that's how the Merkava line came to be. FITS: general hobby plastic models
