The M48 medium tank series started in October 1950. Chrysler got the design job and was to build six prototypes. Korea forced production approval before any prototype was tested. Ford and General Motors won production contracts alongside Chrysler, and the first M48 rolled out in early 1953. Technical problems kept it from deploying in big numbers until 1958. Today there are plenty of variants and mods around the world. This kit builds the M48A3 Patton as U.S. forces ran it in Vietnam. The cast elliptical hull is rigid and well protected, and this 47.5 ton tank has proven itself in combat against comparable opposition. The big upgrade over the M47 was the Turtleback cast steel turret, with more internal room and much better protection. It's armed with a 90mm M41 gun, a coaxial 7.62 machine gun and a 12.7 machine gun in the commander's cupola. FITS: general hobby plastic models
