Rally cars get tested harder than anything, which is why Subaru jumped into the WRC in 1990. The Legacy came first, then the more compact Impreza, packed with two years of proven tech. Buyers wanted a street car with the guts of a WRC contender, and the second generation arrived in August 2000. The Impreza WRX STi's 2-litre turbo four got a reinforced cylinder block, molybdenum coated steel pistons, and a high-capacity turbo and intercooler. Output hit 280hp and 38kgm of torque, sent to all four wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission developed by STi.
