- The UH-1 Iroquois, better known as the Huey, was the first production turbine-powered helicopter. The U.S. military ordered it in 1952 as a medical evacuation and utility bird, and it saw heavy action in Vietnam. No Huey crew earned more respect than Major Bruce Crandall.
- On Nov. 14, 1965, Major Crandall, commander of A Company, 229th Aviation Battalion, flew 14 back-to-back missions into a hot, deadly landing zone to drop supplies and pull out the wounded. He flew a total of three different ships during that fight. Crandall received the Medal of Honor on Feb. 26, 2007.
