About this part
The Convair B-36 Peacemaker was the largest combat aircraft ever built, a 385,000 pound beast. It hit the sky in 1948 as the main nuclear delivery plane for Strategic Air Command until the jet-powered B-52 took over starting in 1955. Four General Electric J-47 turbojets hung in pods under the outer wings, backing up six 3,500 hp Pratt & Whitney engines. Together they pushed it past 435 MPH over target. Snap-action bomb-bay doors replaced the old sliding style and open or close in 2 seconds. Fifteen crew lived in pressurized compartments fore and aft of the bomb bay, including a four-man relief crew. A four-wheeled cart rolled through a 25 inch pressurized tunnel running the full 85 ft length of the all-metal circular middle fuselage.
