HISTORY: The US Navy used the P2V-7 Neptune for maritime patrol, mine laying, torpedo bombing and hurricane tracking. During the International Geophysical Year (1957 to 1958), and especially Operation Deep Freeze, several Neptunes were fitted with skis and flew Antarctic missions. The IGY was a joint effort by 40 nations to study earth science from pole to pole. The US and nine other nations, including the USSR, pushed toward the South Pole, the least explored place on Earth, to expand knowledge of Antarctic hydrography, weather, glacial movement and marine life.
